One Day Eighteenth Century Silk Bonnet Workshop

Expand your sewing skills and discover the secret to
keeping warm and staying fashionable in unpredictable New England
weather... having a fabulous silk bonnet atop your head! A silk
bonnet making workshop is being conducted by
Carrie Midura, owner of Cherry Dawson, Milliner. The workshop
will take place on Saturday, April 5, 2008. Classes will take place
in Billerica, MA.
What to Expect:
Through the use
of primary source research, extant examples, and contemporary
artwork participants will learn about silk bonnets in the second
half of the eighteenth century. These common and useful accessories
were prevalent throughout the New England colonies and this workshop
provides the instruction and materials to create a black silk
bonnet. Detailed
written instructions and will be provided and assistance will be
given through every step of the bonnet making process. Specific
bonnet options (shape, lining color, etc) will be available to
registered participants and those interested are encouraged to contact Carrie (milliner@cherrydawson.com)
to discuss specific questions. |

Workshop session will take place from 10:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m.
Time will be allowed for lunch and several tea & coffee breaks.

thread, pins & needles, measuring tape, marking pen,
beeswax, thimble

18th
century cap
-
Tools for dressing hair in 18th century fashion
beneath cap (comb, bobby pins, etc)

Notebooks and/or
cameras for recording workshop details
- Lunch and/or other
refreshments

The
following will be provided:

including research on New England bonnets

Bonnet
pattern based
on extant example
- All materials
necessary to construct silk bonnet
(options will be available to registered
participants)
