Stays Making |
This six-class workshop explores the history of
stays in the 18th century, focusing on cut, construction and materials.
Each participant will be custom fitted to create a personalized pattern.
Basic materials will be provided, period construction techniques will be
taught, and stays will be constructed during the course of the workshop,
with some work expected between classes. Complete illustrated
instructions and historical information will also be provided. This
workshop is limited to eight participants. |
Gown Draping
 |
This one day workshop provides participants with a custom fitted master
pattern and the skills to drape and construct a c.1770's gown. Through
discussion of historical styles, demonstrations of draping techniques
and individual fittings and assistance, each participant will leave the
workshop with a personalized pattern, a partially constructed gown and
the instructions and confidence to complete the project at home.
Approximately 5 yards of gown fabric & basic sewing kit must be supplied
by the participant, all other materials are provided. This workshop is
limited to ten participants. |
Silk Bonnets
 |
This half-day workshop looks at the prevalence and variety of bonnets
worn during the second half of the 18th century. After trying various
bonnet styles on, each participant will create a unique pattern for her
own bonnet. All materials, including black silk taffeta for the outer
covering, are included in the workshop. Construction methods will be
taught and complete printed instructions will be provided. This workshop
is limited to fifteen participants. |

Jacket Pattern Drafting |
Learn how to enlarge a flat pattern diagram to full-size and redraft the
pattern to fit an individual body. A typical late 18th century jacket
pattern will be used for this workshop. Through a hands-on learning
process, each participant will gain a better understanding of how to
work with scaled pattern diagrams in costume books, create a properly
fitted muslin pattern and receive the information necessary to complete
the jacket at home. Complete printed instructions will be provided. This
workshop is limited to ten participants. |

Female Accoutrements |
This combination lecture and hands-on workshop entails a slide
presentation showing how to choose the appropriate accessories for
different economic and social stations and levels of dress. Participants
will also focusing on making some of these items - for example, shaped
kerchiefs, linen mitts, beaded necklaces, decorative caps and/or hats -
with final selections being chosen by workshop participants. This
workshop is available as a half-day or full-day class and is limited to
twenty participants. |

Trimming Sampler |
This full day workshop will examine the techniques used to create
the elaborate trims seen on gowns, petticoats, caps, hats, and other
18th century garments. Participants will create their own sample
book to use as a reference guide at home, as well as have the
opportunity to experiment with trimming designs on full size gowns
and caps. This workshop is limited to twenty participants.
